Every week or two I am going to start reviewing useful apps I either use or come across. Everybody knows about the basics like Google Chrome or Microsoft Office, but there are a lot of good programs both free and paid for out there that are worth taking a look at.

 

Evernote

If you are looking for a notepad/word processor that does so much more I suggest you seriously take a look at Evernote.

I use Evernote on my computer and smart phone. The great thing about Evernote is that it syncs via the internet (the cloud) and when ever i change a particular file within Evernote on my computer, when I go to the Evernote App on my phone, the same file is edited and up-to-date.

This comes in handy for instance when I am at home and a customer calls and i write down some notes. If I am on the road I simply have to tap my mobile phone Evernote App and see what I wrote down in my computer.

Pros:

• Evernote is Free.
• Easy to keep all your files organised.
• Easy to access your files over the internet.
• Easy to access your files on multiple devices.

Cons:

• Any file you make or import with Evernote, whether its a document, picture or even a movie becomes a Evernote file once you sync it up to the cloud.

 

Windirstat

Ever wondered where all your disk space keeps disappearing too? Well wonder no more with Windirstat.

Winderstat is a small little application for your Windows computer. Remarkebly similar to Disk Inventory X of OSX (Apple Computers), Windirstat gives you a tree structured view of your entire computer and even colour codes your files so you can see visually where all your space os going, what files are taking it up and where they are all stored.

Pros:

• Winirstat is Free.
• Very fast and easy to setup
• Small and light weight.

Cons:

• Not a lot of features. It pretty much does what you need it for and no more.

 

VLC – VideoLAN

A lot of people pretty much already now about VLC but for those of you who do not, you will really love this one if you play media files such as music and videos.

The problem with all these different types of camera and media makers is a lot of them use their own type of format and way of making and encoding media (Videos etc).  Thats all good and well but the problem is with so many different types of media files, you need all these diufferent video plays to play them.

Have you ever gone to open a video and it didn’t play?

VLC works to play as many formats and media types as possible from all different platforms, and it does a vert good job. If you watch a lot of movies or stream a lot on line, VLC is perfect for you to be able to play most files.

Pros:

• Works on Windows, Linux, Smart Phones, Tablets and Macs.
• Small, light weight.
• Stream or play multiple formats and files.
• Dedicated team and lots of updates.
• VLC is Free.

Cons:

• Uninstalling can sometimes be a mess around.
