Things to think about before installing Windows 10 – Part 1

Windows 10 is a nice upgrade from Windows 8 and 8.1. Windows 8 had mixed results and a lot of people either loved it or hated it. I didn’t mind Windows 8 at all and I still use it on a couple of my computers at home.

Windows 10 has also been a very nice free upgrade and I quite like its design of somewhere between Windows 7 and 8. Microsoft tried to distance itself from Windows at by creating 10 and skipping 9, so don’t think use missed Windows 9 because it never existed.

If your computer was bought in a store with Windows 10 a lot of this post does not apply to you. Most of the computers built for Windows 10 do not have a lot of problems Windows 7 or 8 computers have when the upgrade and I will discuss a few of these problems people get when they perform the upgrade form an earlier version of Windows.

Windows 10 Requirements

To begin with, there is no point upgrading to Windows 10 unless your computer has the very minimal requirements, or it simply will not work.

Make sure your computer at least has the following:

Processor: 1 GHz (min)

Memory: 2GB Ram

HDD Space: 16GB

GraphicsMicrosoft DirectX 9

Microsoft would like everyone to have a Windows online account to use their operating system but you do not have to do this and you can still create a local account on your computer like earlier versions of Windows.

Activation

Once you have upgraded your computer to Windows 10 it should activate itself automatically. Unfortunately a few people have had problems with this that has resulted in them being restricted on their machine.

Make sure you back everything up before upgrading to Windows 10 so you do not get locked out of your own computer and cant access your data, photos, music etc.

If you are unable to activate your Windows 10 operating system after an upgrade and you are running out of time before you need to, you might be able to go back to the previous build and use your computer as it was with Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 again.

Don’t expect to be able to control updates

Windows 10 does not let you control what updates you can get. With a few tweaks you can stop getting updates altogether but when you install something else operating system related every now and again they have a habit of turning themselves back on.

Usually this isn’t a problem but if you are using a 3g or 4G internet connection with limited data every month you can very quickly and easily go through a lot of it with Windows operating system updates, so be prepared.
